Background of the study:
Skeletal remains analysis plays a pivotal role in resolving missing person cases in Akure South. Through meticulous examination of bones and related tissues, forensic experts can establish identity, age, sex, and cause of death (Olayinka, 2023; Ajayi, 2024). In Ondo State, where many cases remain unsolved due to the absence of soft tissue evidence, skeletal analysis offers a reliable alternative for forensic investigations. Advanced techniques such as DNA extraction from bone and isotopic analysis have enhanced the accuracy of identifications, providing critical leads in investigations (Olayinka, 2023). The integration of these scientific methods with traditional investigative procedures has contributed to solving long-standing cases and bringing closure to families. However, challenges such as limited access to advanced laboratory facilities and insufficient expertise continue to impede progress in this field (Ajayi, 2024). Emphasizing the importance of skeletal remains analysis is essential for improving investigative outcomes and reinforcing the criminal justice process (Ibid, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Missing person cases in Akure South are often compounded by inadequate forensic resources and reliance on traditional investigative methods. The lack of specialized skeletal analysis has resulted in unresolved cases and prolonged distress for affected families. Addressing these deficiencies is imperative to improve case resolution (Olayinka, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of skeletal remains analysis in missing person cases.
  2. To identify key challenges in applying these techniques.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing forensic capabilities.

Research questions:

  1. How effective is skeletal remains analysis in identifying missing persons?
  2. What challenges hinder its application in Akure South?
  3. What strategies can improve forensic outcomes?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Skeletal remains analysis significantly increases identification rates.
  2. Limited forensic resources adversely affect case resolution.
  3. Enhanced laboratory techniques will improve investigative success.

Significance of the study:
This study underscores the critical role of skeletal analysis in solving missing person cases, providing recommendations for resource improvement and enhanced forensic practices that can expedite investigations and offer justice to affected families (Ajayi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the use of skeletal remains analysis in solving missing person cases in Akure South Local Government Area. It does not consider other forensic disciplines or geographic areas.

Definitions of terms:

  • Skeletal remains analysis: The study of bones to determine identity and cause of death.
  • Missing person cases: Investigations focused on unidentified or lost individuals.
  • Forensic capabilities: The resources and expertise available for conducting forensic investigations.
